The Origin Story

My interest in sketching began as a hobby and quickly grew into a passionate pursuit. My initial sketches were done during my global trips, expressing the beauty of local landmarks and daily scenes, gradually evolving into a more structured and expressive form of art.

Exploring stories of my Hometown's beauty

In 2020, I embarked on a new Journey through “AlMahrousa project”, In pursuit of focusing on exploring Egypt’s rich cultural heritage through detailed sketches. It aims to capture the beauty and essence of Egyptian landmarks and everyday life.

Building up a Portfolio through Global stories, told in Ink & Color

Further on, I enriched my portfolio, through diving deep in more stories, aiming to tell better tales and reconnect with our heritage roots

I embarked on a 100-day challenge to sketch daily, which allowed me to refine my skills, explore various techniques, and deepen my understanding of urban sketching.

Throughout this summer, I’ve been sharing how we can enjoy our season differently—with watercolors. 🌊 We’ve taken them to the beach, and I’ve hosted workshops where I taught the basics of watercolors, applying them to paint the sea, sky, and sand. 🌅🏖️

🤔 Hmm, good question..
Because this journey has changed my life a lot. I was a bit confused..
Should it continue since ideas never end, and everything drawn and told can be part of this journey? Or should it end to stay complete as it is?
🌀 I wondered and asked myself, "Why do I want it to continue?" I realized it's related to FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
I'm afraid of forgetting, of losing the feeling I experienced during this journey.
Or simply... I feel like if I leave this space, I'll get lost.
But that's the opposite of the goal I started this journey for. Instead of repeating, I decided to grow.
📚 I want to document the feeling and share it with each one of you.in a medium that lasts longer than these short videos.
💡That's why the best solution for me was to turn it into a book or a podcast!
📖 But not just a book to tell the story and show the drawings. I also want to share the behind-the-scenes moments... the good and not-so-good ones. I want to tell you what I think and feel. And talk about what worked for me during the tough moments. So this journey can inspire those who read about it. And be a documentation for me to refer back to whenever I feel lost.

Today, I'm answering the question that started this series... WHY DO I DO URBAN SKETCHING👋
1️⃣ Because from the day I discovered this world, my perspective on life changed. I became able to focus on the beauty in the details around me without losing sight of the big picture.
2️⃣ I learned a language to express my surroundings and tell stories. Through it, I discovered a different perspective on travel and created traditions in each trip that make the memories last.
3️⃣ Urban sketching created opportunities for connection. It's a truly beautiful feeling when my drawings attract those around me, opening up chances to talk, share, and inspire them.
4️⃣ Through my art, I've built a community. Over the workshops I’ve conducted, I've had the chance to share the beauty of urban sketching, journaling, and watercoloring. I've been with each of you on your journey as you embark on a new adventure capable of changing your life.
5️⃣ Urban sketching has made me present in the moment. It taught me the value of the life I'm living, allowed me to learn and grow, and most importantly, share urban sketching as a language of expression. I travel the world one sketch at a time.

THE END OF AN ERA!🔽

✨ This journey helped me rediscover myself and realize I can do more than I ever imagined.
🌍 It started with a question, "Why do I sketch urban scenes and do what I do?"
✨ And it's ending with new questions that might start new adventures.
🌆 Throughout the series, I shared stories about myself, places I love, and places that need to be remembered.
👻 We ventured into the fantasy surrounding haunted places in our folklore.
🏛️ We discussed architectural concepts and the beauty in our buildings.
🌙 We celebrated 30 unique days of Ramadan, different from our usual nostalgia.
🎨 I launched my watercolor palette and started new, exciting adventures with it. 🤝 I met new friends and had enjoyable collaborations.

🌟 Over the past three months, after missing our connection, my workshops are back!
We’ve done 9 Waves, meeting around 90 new people in two countries. 🌍 Each workshop was an adventure, exploring new experiences and discovering a different way to enjoy our time while traveling, both inside and outside our countries. WHAT HAPPENED IN DUBAI? 🤔🇦🇪
I traveled to Dubai to host a series of my travel workshops. ✈️🧳 Before the workshops, we took a car tour 🚗 and had lunch at PF Chang's, famous for their Dynamite Shrimp 🍤🔥 with my friends @george.delacroix & @marina_adel_hanna ,After that, I did some shopping for books and stationery 📚🛍️.
Over two days, I conducted the workshops, which were a truly enjoyable experience as I shared in the previous video. 🎨😊 By the way, I’ll be repeating them again in October and November, and you can join the waiting list now to get early details and dates before they are announced here. 📅🔜
Of course, the trip had to end with a sketch. I grabbed my bag and colors and headed to Kite Beach 🏖️ to sketch the Burj Al Arab from there. 🏝️🏙️ I also included the sea in the scene 🌊. The heat made it tough to capture all the details on my phone, but I had a lot of fun with the experience and the sketch. 🎨📱✨

I just got back from Dubai where I hosted two amazing workshops—Travel Sketching Journals and Watercoloring Seascapes. 🌊🖌️ Sharing my passion for art and journaling with a talented and enthusiastic group of people was a dream come true. Seeing the creativity and unique perspectives of each participant filled my heart with so much joy and gratitude. It reminded me why I fell in love with art in the first place—it’s about connection, expression, and the beauty of seeing the world through different eyes.

This experience was a milestone in my journey as an artist. It’s not just about teaching techniques; it’s about building a community where we inspire and uplift each other. Seeing the smiles and excitement on everyone’s faces as they created their masterpieces was an invaluable reward.

A good director knows how to tell a story with just a few scenes. Similarly, in sketching, ✏️ the skill lies in making the whole scene speak without needing an explanation.

I finished the page spread I started with a drawing of Rathusplatz, the town hall. 🏛️ To make this drawing truly complement the page, I applied 3 important composition rules. 📏 First, I used **flow** to make the towers stand tall and draw the eye upward. 🌆 Second, I chose **colors** that were vibrant to reflect the sunny day after a rainy one. 🌞 Lastly, I used **story and style** to highlight the top 4 landmarks of Vienna, making the final artwork a collective masterpiece. 🖌️

🎨🗿 SKETCHING SCULPTURES and sculpting drawings!🔽

At 7 AM, I started my second day in Vienna with a visit and a walk around the Austrian Parliament 🏛️
The building is designed in Greek style, reminiscent of everything I've seen and sketched in Greece before 🇬🇷🖌️
I decided to sketch the statue of Athena - the symbol of wisdom, along with the fountain in front of the Parliament 🌟🏺
The place is surrounded by statues representing the four largest rivers in Europe 🌍🌊
I love sketching statues on their own 👨‍🎨
I feel that capturing the 3D essence is a unique challenge in sketching 🎨🖋️
Also, sketching statues feels like a nice change from the routine of drawing buildings 🏙️
I didn't feel like adding color this time, and I felt that the black ink and gold made a nice contrast 🖤💛
From there, I started a new adventure in the streets of Inner Stadt in Vienna 🚶‍♂️✨

APPROACHING A GIANT SCENE🤔🔽
📅 Today I visited the tallest building in Vienna, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and found myself in front of a massive, detail-rich place.
🏰🎨 It’s a city symbol that you can find everywhere.
🖌️This kind of situation always intimidates any sketcher because of the amount of details..The questions are always “Where do I start?” and “When do I stop?”
🗑️This is where the skill of SUBTRACTION comes in. How do we remove unnecessary details and focus on a part of the whole while still capturing the essence of the place?
✨🏛️ When we decide to do this, we remove the problem of having to draw everything in front of us, known scientifically as DECISION FATIGUE.
🧠💡 We reduce the number of things we get occupied with to focus on the more important aspects. I decided to focus on the colorful roof adorned with royal motifs and the two front towers. 🎨👑 This way, I lessened the amount of details and was able to enjoy my day with some Manner sweets that I had before sketching. 🍫🍬

Let's go back to the Travel Sketching Journals I did in Austria. 🇦🇹
🌇 Vienna is such a sophisticated city, and maybe that's why everyone who visits loves it. It was a challenge for me to sketch there because with all the details, it's hard to move quickly and see many places.
👨‍🎨That's why I applied the principles of Speed Sketching, which I teach in my Travel Sketching Journals workshop.
📣📣Remember, I'm holding this workshop in July in Dubai and Cairo, so you can prepare for your summer travels in a unique way! One of the ways to do speed sketching is by drawing the main lines, or Sketch Bones.
📏How to simplify the scenes in front of you into a set of basic lines and combine them. I used this idea today for my first sketch in Vienna, Karlskirche, which was built in the 18th century by order of Emperor Charles VI. After the main shapes, I started adding details and coloring. This way, I was able to draw a complex scene with simple lines.

🌊Like every summer, to get ready for the holidays and beach trips, I’ve launched the first workshop of the year on seascapes: Watercoloring Seascapes.
But this time, I’ve introduced two new elements:
📒First, we created a special Guiding Book for the workshop, packed with exercises on controlling the water-to-color ratio and brush techniques. It includes step-by-step drills to help you paint skies and seas, creating beautiful seascapes.

🌟SKETCHING LIKE A HOMELESS🔽
🚶‍♂️ After trekking from Prague Castle to St. Nicholas Church, I searched for a place to sit.
👟My feet were killing me from all the walking, so I ended up on the pavement next to some kind homeless folks. I sketched the church dome, which blends Gothic and Neo-Baroque styles.
🎨 From there, I walked to Charles Bridge.
🌉The bridge was filled with amazing artists that inspired me to sketch more. So, when I crossed the bridge, I decided to draw a panoramic view of the castle, the river, and the bridge.

Touring World Largest Castle in One Day🔽
🏰I thought I could tour all of Prague Castle in one day. Turns out, I was overly ambitious.
🚶For me, when I visit a place while traveling, I try to maintain a balance between immersing myself in the experience and not getting too absorbed, so I can see as many places as possible. It’s a constant push and pull, depending on the situation.
🌍 That’s what happened when I tried to explore Prague Castle—until I read that it’s the largest castle complex in the world, covering 70,000 square meters. Well, good luck with that!
🔭 The roofs and towers were the most captivating parts for me. The castle has an interesting mix of architectural styles, which is unusual but beautiful.
⛪️ I decided to move on to St. Nicholas Church, not knowing what awaited me there.

📣📣رأيكوا كنت ألفها كاملة ولا أنا كده عملت الصح؟ - Should I have toured the whole castle

The founding site of Czechoslovakia 🇨🇿🔽
🇨🇿 On October 28, 1918, five public figures stood among millions and signed the law establishing Czechoslovakia, declaring its independence right where I enjoyed my coffee today.
🕖I began my day at 7 AM at Wenceslas Square. The first thing that caught my eye was the statue of Wenceslas on his horse, a significant figure as the protector of Bohemia, for whom the square is named.
✏️Starting with a pencil sketch and a calm background reflecting the morning atmosphere, I completed my drawing.
🏛️Then, I moved on to sketch the National Museum, built in the same year, housing 14 million items. I wanted to capture its dome and the sunlight reflecting off the golden motifs, making it shine brightly.
🕙By the time I finished my beloved sketch, it was 10 AM, time for the Big Bus tour 🚌. I'll explore Prague and head to Prague Castle for more sketching.
🫣Passing by the opera house reminded me of that evening, but I have no regrets as I drew and had a great time.

Sketching, staring & happy ducks in Prague🦆✨
After a full afternoon in Old Town Square, I found an amazing spot by the famous 600-year-old astronomical clock. The vibes here are so relaxing. The clock tells fascinating stories, with figures representing undesirable traits and statues appearing every hour, drawing a crowd.
In 2018, during restoration, the artist secretly painted his relatives' and friends' faces on the figures. They're restoring it again soon, so I'm glad I saw it!
I finished my sketch, added journaling elements like washi tape, text, and a postcard. Then, I found a shop selling ducks I collect and got one representing Prague 🦆.
It was a lovely evening, and I had a great time! 🌆🖌️

🗺️I arrived in Prague, with high spirits after what happened on the train, which I shared with you earlier. I headed straight to the Old Town Square, the heart of the city. On my way, I passed by this opera house and was mesmerized by its exterior.
🎭I found out the opera times and when to return, all sorted. On my way, I stumbled upon a hidden bookstore and grabbed some stationery and a bakery where I got a brioche. 🍞
I reached the square, pulled out a new brush pen I got from the bookstore. sketching Gothic architecture was stepping out of my comfort zone. I got deeply engrossed in the towers and details of the church. 🏰
😯I started coloring only to discover that the ink wasn’t waterproof. I tried to adapt. I finished my sketch, and honestly, I’m quite pleased with it. This encouraged me to continue with the statue of Jan Hus✒️
Well, it’s 8:05 PM now. I missed the opera, but the square still offered me a new gem: the astronomical clock⏰

In 2020, I embarked on a new Journey through “AlMahrousa project”, In pursuit of focusing on exploring Egypt’s rich cultural heritage through detailed sketches. It aims to capture the beauty and essence of Egyptian landmarks and everyday life.

Further on, I enriched my portfolio, through diving deep in more stories, aiming to tell better tales and reconnect with our heritage roots
